The availability of water has emerged as a major concern for residents and businesses in Southern Arizona. I have been asked by many constituents to consider what role the federal government could play in responding to the issues surrounding water availability and use in the area. In response to those requests, I convened a Water Issues Town Hall on July 1, 2008 in Sahuarita to hear presentations and gather information from residents, business owners and water experts.
As a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, I also offered an amendment to the Water Use Efficiency and Conservation Research Act (H.R. 3957) on July 16, 2008. My amendment, which was unanimously passed by voice vote, would authorize a study to examine innovative, systematic approaches to managing water supply, wastewater, and storm-water in urban areas and surrounding communities.
